Mission
The mission of the American Medical Association (AMA) is to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health through leadership, excellence, integrity, and ethical behavior. AMA strives to be an essential part of the professional life of every physician and to help doctors help patients by uniting physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues. The Florida Medical Association (FMA) and the Capital Medical Society (CMS) mirror these values, with further focus on issues pertinent to the state of Florida and the city of Tallahassee. Together, the AMA, FMA and CMS play an active role in shaping the future of medicine.The AMA, FMA, and CMS offer an amazing opportunity for medical students to join a network of health professionals and resources to help them excel as physicians, public health practitioners, and leaders within their communities. As a member of these organizations, students are given the tools to be kept informed of current and pressing health issues and policies. Members also enjoy numerous opportunities to win scholarship money and honors. Several times a year, students are able to travel to regional and national AMA/FMA conferences and partake as voting delegates, award recipients or simply as inquisitive members. Through these conferences, students are able to interact with fellow medical students and prominent physicians from all across the nation and learn about important health care topics and how individual medical students can make a difference.
FSU College of Medicine’s AMA/FMA/CMS chapter offers many opportunities for students to get involved on campus, in Tallahassee and on the state and national levels. With the State Capitol and FMA headquarters nearby, students are able to personally intermingle with State legislators, sit in on Senate committee meetings and attend receptions and dinners with influential physicians and lawmakers. In addition, with 7 campuses and a voting delegate at each campus, FSU COM has the largest voting power in the State, giving us a great edge at national AMA meetings. All students are encouraged to submit resolutions at these meetings. FSU COM’s AMA/FMA/CMS chapter is also active in community service events, including the Annual Cover the Uninsured Week and AMA National Projects- these projects change yearly with past headlines being Anti-Tobacco Education and Get-Healthy Project. And of course, FSU COM’s AMA/FMA/CMS chapter holds monthly lunch meetings at the College of Medicine with local physicians and leaders as guest speakers.

Ultimately AMSA's goal is to take action as students and become stronger advocates for where we believe medicine should be going. AMSA sponsors national primary care week, healthcare speakers, skit night, and more.

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is a national organization that is dedicated to promoting women's health, improving the professional development and personal well-being of its members, and increasing the influence of women in all aspects of the medical profession. American Medical Women's Association is a national organization designed to address the needs of female medical professionals and female patients. At the FSU College of Medicine, this group serves two purposes. First, it is a source of support for female medical and PA students. Women face unique challenges as physicians as they attempt to balance family and medicine. AMWA is here to provide support and advice. Second, we serve as a source of information about the special needs of female patient populations. Topics we are presently addressing at FSU COM are the health and well-being of medical students, violence against women, and professional development.

Our mission is to address critical aspects of anesthesiology, with a focus on increasing the presence of anesthesiologists in underserved rural areas both nationally and globally. We strive to deepen understanding of the specialty’s role in combating the United States opioid epidemic and educate the medical community on the diverse roles of general and subspecialty anesthesiologists. Through outreach and education, we aim to dispel misconceptions about anesthesiology procedures among healthcare professionals and the public. LMSA is organized primarily for providing support and guidance to Latino, Hispanic, and all medical students in FSUCOM and FSU undergraduates. This organization also aims to raise awareness about latin culture and medicine amongst the latin community.
(1) providing support and guidance to Latino medical students in FSUCOM; (2) providing education programs for Latino snd non-latino medical students in the FSUCOM; (3) promoting biomedical and health services research, including cultural competence and language issues, for members of the Latino community and to address the health care needs of this community; (4) developing interest in Latino health policy research by Latino and non-latino medical students at FSUCOM;(5) encouraging Latino college students to pursue careers in medicine and health care services which address the health care needs of members of Hispanic community(6) the conduct of any other activities related to the above-stated purposes, including the promotion of charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes in Latino community(7) provide support to undergraduate students who have interest in a future medical career.

Cares Society at FSU is a dynamic medical student organization devoted to helping the underserved and underprivileged populations both locally and internationally. Our mission is to provide health services, including medical care, education, and counseling to those people who would not otherwise have access to care while providing an interactive, clinical learning environment for FSU College of Medicine students.

We pride ourselves on local outreach because we realize that there are people who are in desperate need of medical help right in our own backyard! FSUCares has established a partnership with local organizations such as the Leon County Health Department, Neighborhood Health Services, the Bond Clinic, and the Tallahassee Shelter. Some local activities include setting up health information and screening at the Migrant Health Fair in Gadsden County, caring for patients at the Neighborhood Health Services Clinic, and establishing monthly health screenings at the local Homeless Shelter.

Our international and state medical outreach focuses on rural villages in Filipinas, Panama, and the underserved populations at the Texas-Mexico border and Immokalee, FL. The goals of our medical outreach programs are to focus on the unique public health factors that influence different regions of the world in order to expose and prepare future doctors for the ever-changing face of medicine and society.

FSU Emergency Medicine Interest Group was founded in the spring of 2002 by students interested in emergency medicine. EMIG strives to educate current medical students about the residency possibilities and practice of emergency medicine.
EMIG has hosted intubation clinics, suture clinics, lectures on the practice of emergency medicine, participated in FSU community health fairs by doing blood pressure checks and heart screenings, sponsored student observations in Tallahassee Memorial Hospital's Bixler Emergency Center, and helped send members to national conferences hosted by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Medicine Resident's Association. Future goals include arranging EMS ambulance ride-alongs, additional clinics, Q&A panels featuring local emergency physicians, and continued participation at national conferences.
Membership in EMIG is open to any FSU College of Medicine student interested in learning more about the field of emergency medicine as a specialty. Feel free to contact any of the officers for any further information!

The purpose of the FMIG is to educate and promote family medicine at Florida State University College of Medicine. FMIG currently provides speakers with topics of interest relating to Family Medicine, organizes a Wine and Cheese Social to allow medical students to meet local Family Physicians, organizes and implements TAR WARS which is an antismoking campaign sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), organizes an annual health fair that will be in conjunction with FSU Homecoming/FSUCares 5K, and provide interested medical students with the opportunity to attend the AAFP national conference and other state conferences. We recruit speakers to discuss current medical issues and residencies.

The purpose of this organization is to promote healthcare to rural citizens of the state of Florida in both policy and practice. It also gives students the opportunity to become affiliated with rural health organizations in Florida, provides knowledge of legislative issues pertaining to rural health, and serves rural communities in health related events.
The FSU College of Medicine FRHA strives to educate medical students on the benefits and challenges of healthcare in the rural setting. The organization also helps introduce students from urban areas to rural culture. The addition of the Medical Student Chapter of the FRHA was a natural one, as the organization promotes the rural service mission of the FSU College of Medicine.

The Geriatrics Interest Group (GIG) of the Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) is to educate and promote geriatric medicine at the Florida State University (FSU). The GIG promotes the involvement of students and professionals from various disciplines concerned with the care of the geriatric community, with the purpose of enhancing the multiple dimensions of geriatric care. Members of the GIG, also, have the opportunity to join the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the Florida Geriatrics Society (FGS), which provide additional opportunities for informative meetings and conferences to attend. The primary focus of the GIG activities is to meet the needs of the geriatric community through education, community outreach, and student geriatric involvement.

The Medical Student Council (MSC) is composed of a board of Medical, PA, Masters, and Doctoral students who serve the student body at the Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM). MSC has the ability to act as the voice of the College of Medicine student body and has the authority to bring forth resolutions within Student Government Association (SGA) and the Congress of Graduate Students (COGS) in the best interest of medical students. MSC is the funding board for student activities and governs the Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) at the FSU COM.

Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness (NEW) is a medical student–led organization dedicated to promoting a holistic approach to health by educating students, faculty, and the broader community on the essential roles of nutrition, physical activity, and overall wellness in the medical profession. Recognizing the unique physical and mental demands placed on those working in healthcare, NEW aims to empower future physicians to prioritize their own well-being while learning how to better support the health of their patients.
Throughout the academic year, NEW hosts a variety of events designed to foster both physical and mental wellness. These include invited guest speakers such as physicians, dietitians, fitness professionals, and wellness experts who provide evidence-based education on topics related to nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sustainable lifestyle habits. At least once each semester, NEW also brings in speakers to engage students in meaningful discussions that connect personal wellness with clinical practice.
In addition to educational lectures, NEW offers interactive nutrition and exercise workshops that emphasize hands-on learning. These workshops allow participants to apply practical skills such as reading nutrition labels, meal planning, and developing effective workout routines reinforcing the idea that wellness is both teachable and attainable.
To further encourage an active and balanced lifestyle, NEW hosts structured exercise classes each semester that are accessible to students and staff of all fitness levels. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, NEW strives to help members build consistency, reduce stress, and develop lifelong habits that promote physical health and resilience.

The Radiology Interest Group is a student-run organization that seeks to foster interest in the fields of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. RIG aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about the field and get involved in research, shadowing, and mentorship. Additionally, we aim to support and guide medical students in their pursuit of radiology as a future career.
We intend to host presentations, panel discussions, and workshops to expose students to the subspecialties of radiology, various imaging modalities, the residency application process, and on-going research in the field. Through these opportunities, we hope to enable students to make informed decisions regarding a possible future career in diagnostic or interventional radiology.
